Heartland Institute Experts React to
Obama’s Climate Change Speech

President Barack Obama today delivered a speech laying out his energy and environment agenda for his second term – a plan that includes tighter regulations on power plants, mandates to increase vehicle mileage, and increased subsidies for solar and wind projects on federal lands.

The following statements from energy and environment policy experts at The Heartland Institute – a free-market think tank – may be used for attribution. “The president’s restrictions are unnecessary, futile, and economically punishing. The restrictions are unnecessary because global temperatures have remained flat for the past 15 years, proving alarmist climate models predict far too much warming and have no basis in reality. Moreover, U.S. carbon dioxide emissions are already falling dramatically without the punitive measures the president is proposing. (more…)

Heartland Institute Responds to Rep. Markey Letter on ‘Fakegate’

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Source:  Heartland Institute

MARCH 15, 2012 – The Heartland Institute today sent a letter to Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), responding to Markey’s February 24 request for confirmation of the authenticity of stolen and forged documents distributed by Pacific Institute President Peter Gleick.

The scandal is known as “Fakegate” because one of the documents, supposedly describing Heartland’s “climate strategy,” was not written by anyone associated with The Heartland Institute and does not reflect Heartland’s work on environmental policy. Gleick has claimed he received the memo “in the mail” from an anonymous source.

In his reply to Rep. Markey, Heartland Institute President Joseph Bast writes, “Your letter repeats several false statements that appeared in the fake memo and have been circulated widely in the press. We thank you for this opportunity to set the record straight about our position on climate change.”

For more information on this scandal, visit Fakegate.org and Heartland.org. Media questions and requests for interviews may be directed to Tammy Nash at tnash@heartland.org and 312/377-4000 or Jim Lakely at jlakely@heartland.org. (more…)

Breaking: Eminent Scientist May be Jailed for Faking Climate Emails

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Source:  CCD

In a sensational public confession a leading climatologist, Peter Gleick has admitted to taking part in a high-profile climate emails forgery that has backfired; says it was done to intentionally injure skeptic foundation.

Britain’s pro-green national daily, ‘The Guardian’  was the first major newspaper to break the news that Dr. Peter Gleick had confessed to unlawfully libeling the prominent climate skeptic supporter, the Heartland Institute (HI). Heartland is a 28-year-old national nonprofit organization with offices in Chicago, Illinois and Washington, DC. Its mission is “to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems.” (more…)

What are the depths of Peter Gleick’s depravity in the Heartland global warming smear attack?

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Source:  Red State

[UPDATE: The preliminary steps of removing Peter Gleick from positions of authority and respect have begun: he's 'resigned' from his position with the National Center for Science Education, and his scientific ethics task force chairmanship(!) for the American Geophysical Union.  One wonders whether groups like the MacArthur Fellows Program and NAS will insist that Gleick cut all ties from them, as well.  Nobody's really expecting the Pacific Institute to join in, of course: it's a well-known reliable quote machine for the American Left.]

OK, quick background: last week there was a bit of fuss when a variety of documents appeared that purported to show that there was some sort of nefarious global warming ‘denialist’ (that’s what a Lefty calls somebody who has noticed that, hey, the temperature’s not actually rising the way that people told us it would) conspiracy centered around the Heartland Institute. The Heartland Institute was not amused by this, and has been making it clear that at least one document was a pathetic forgery. This latter point has generally been conceded by all the players, if tacitly, and the great walkback is beginning. I recommend Watts Up With That for those looking to monitor further developments: that site has been all over this story. (more…)

Stolen Heartland Documents: DeSmog Blog Keeps Blowing Smoke

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Updated 4:34 pm, Feb. 21, 2012

“Climate scientist Peter Gleick has acknowledged that he was the person who convinced the Heartland Institute to hand over the contents of its January Board package, authenticating the documents beyond a doubt and further exposing the disinformation campaign Heartland has pursued in the last week, trying to discredit the information,” writes DeSmog Blog in a post titled “Whistleblower Authenticates Heartland Documents” (Feb. 20, 2012).

Gleick is indeed the culprit, but he is not a “whistleblower” because to be a candidate for that honorable title, he’d have to be a current or former employee. Gleick acknowledges that he, an outside critic of the organization, solicited and received Heartland documents under false pretenses, an action he describes as a ”serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics.” (more…)

Peter Gleick Admits to Deception in Obtaining Heartland Climate Files

By ANDREW C. REVKIN

Peter H. Gleick, a water and climate analyst who has been studying aspects of global warming for more than two decades, in recent years became an aggressive critic of organizations and individuals casting doubt on the seriousness of greenhouse-driven climate change. He used blogs, congressional testimony, group letters and other means to make his case.

Now, Gleick has admitted to an act that leaves his reputation in ruins and threatens to undercut the cause he spent so much time pursuing. His summary, just published on his blog at Huffington Post, speaks for itself. You can read his short statement below with a couple of thoughts from me: (more…)

DeSmog Blog’s Bogus “Exposé” of the Heartland Institute

Earlier this week, the climate hysterics at DeSmog Blog and ThinkProgress tried (but failed) to manufacture a scandal by posting board-meeting and fund-raising documents stolen under false pretenses from the Heartland Institute, the Illinois-based free-market think tank. You can read Heartland’s response to the document heist here.

In the climate debate, Heartland is perhaps best known as organizer and host of six international climate conferences and as publisher of Climate Change Reconsidered: The Report of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC).

The Heartland conferences transformed the disparate ranks of climate-alarm skeptics into a confident, energized, networked movement. The NIPCC report and related publications not only debunk Al Gore’s “planetary emergency” but also provide the only comprehensive, fully-documented alternative to the alleged “scientific consensus” represented by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Heartland Institute Responds to Stolen and Fake Documents

FEBRUARY 15, 2012 – The following statement from The Heartland Institute – a free-market think tank – may be used for attribution. For more information, contact Communications Director Jim Lakely at jlakely@heartland.org and 312/377-4000.

Yesterday afternoon, two advocacy groups posted online several documents they claimed were The Heartland Institute’s 2012 budget, fundraising, and strategy plans. Some of these documents were stolen from Heartland, at least one is a fake, and some may have been altered.

The stolen documents appear to have been written by Heartland’s president for a board meeting that took place on January 17. He was traveling at the time this story broke yesterday afternoon and still has not had the opportunity to read them all to see if they were altered. Therefore, the authenticity of those documents has not been confirmed. (more…)

Heart of the matter [Profile of Joe Bast]

BY JEFF TOLLEFSON

Joe Bast considers himself an environmentalist. He and his wife Diane used to volunteer for the Sierra Club, one of the United States’ largest environmental groups. The two built a geodesic dome in the Wisconsin countryside and once entertained the idea of abandoning the city to live off the land. But today Bast is on the other side of a cultural divide, fighting former colleagues, politicians and scientists on the battlefield of global warming.

As head of the Heartland Institute, a policy think tank with a free-market focus based in Chicago, Illinois, Bast has raised millions of dollars to mount a systematic attack on mainstream climate science. The organization provides fodder for politicians and conservative commentators bent on preventing government regulation of carbon emissions, and Heartland’s climate conferences have become rallies for sceptics. Scott Denning is a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University.

[SPPI is pleased to have been invited to co-sponsor this event]

At least this year they didn’t bring hockey sticks! In late June I attended the Heartland Institute’s 6th International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC) in Washington DC. This was the second time the organizers invited me to the conference. Every attendee at last year’s conference was handed a two-foot-long hockey stick to reinforce Heartland’s complaints about what they see as an incorrect interpretation of published 1000-year temperature proxy reconstructions. Perhaps unsurprisingly, nearly every speaker at the meeting denounced the climate change science consensus, lambasted mitigation policy, or delved into details about solar cycles and natural climate variability.

Scott Denning is a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University.

This year Heartland senior fellow James Taylor invited me to present at ICCC, even though he knew I would deliver a very strong and persuasive case for the physical basis of anthropogenic climate change and the dire need for an aggressive policy response. At the meeting, I was treated with respect and even warmth despite my vehement disagreement with most of the other presenters. Heartland gave me a very prominent platform: both an hour-long keynote debate over lunch with Prof. Roy Spencer and a 15-minute plenary presentation in the final panel of the meeting. (more…)

Society to review climate message

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

by Roger Harrabin

The UK’s Royal Society is reviewing its public statements on climate change after 43 Fellows complained that it had oversimplified its messages.

They said the communications did not properly distinguish between what was widely agreed on climate science and what is not fully understood.

The society’s ruling council has responded by setting up a panel to produce a consensus document.

The panel should report in July and the report is to be published in September. (more…)

Online media leader offers viewers on-the-ground coverage of International Conference on Climate Change

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — PJTV today announced it will stream LIVE coverage of the Heartland Institute’s 4th Annual International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC-4) – a worldwide gathering of global warming “realists” – from Chicago, IL, on May 16-18.  The online television network will offer viewers videos and analysis from each keynote speaker as well as a number of the conference events.

“Climategate is hotter than ever – especially after the introduction of Sens. Kerry and Lieberman’s American Power Act,” said Roger L. Simon, CEO of Pajamas Media.  ”New evidence calls into question the impact human activity had on global temperatures in the 20th Century.  Nonetheless, many opinion leaders and Members of Congress fail to discuss these new scientific discoveries that dismantle the liberal agenda.  PJTV is excited to bring viewers a different part of the debate than is portrayed on Capitol Hill or in the main stream media.” (more…)

CO2 Benefits Marine Life

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Written By: James M. Taylor

A new research paper by Dr. Craig Idso, author of the 2009 book, CO2, Global Warming and Coral Reefs: Prospects for the Future, exposes the flimsy science behind a recent National Resources Defense Council film claiming carbon dioxide is destroying the world’s oceans.

The research paper, “Acid Test: The Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification,” documents extensive scientific evidence that human emissions of carbon dioxide are not poisoning the oceans to the detriment of marine invertebrates or other marine life. To the contrary, the paper shows that “even a cursory review of the peer-reviewed scientific literature reveals … that the ongoing rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration will actually prove a boon to calcifying marine life.” [emphasis in the original] (more…)

Time to ban Greenpeace and give its riches to the poor

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

From The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley

The environmental movement – or, rather, the Marxist, anti-capitalist, pro-poverty, anti-Western threat to our liberty, democracy, prosperity, and security – should now be made illegal. Its increasingly desperate lies are causing real, serious harm. People are starving in their millions as a direct result of the doubling of world food prices caused by the misuse of land that once grew food for people that need it and now grows biofuels for clunkers that don’t. The environmental movement has the blood of these starving millions on its hands. It doesn’t care. It is now stepping up its ever-more-blatant campaign to propagandize and indoctrinate children and set them against their parents.

Greenpeace, whose genuinely environmentally-concerned founders left it when the Marxist entryists muscled in and took it over, has just issued a repellent advertisement showing a thuggish, surly, smutty-faced kid saying -

“The scientific community released a report that proves beyond a doubt that the Earth is getting warmer. This global warming is caused by things you grown-ups do, and by the things you don’t do. If drastic measures aren’t taken soon, by the time I grow up there won’t be any fish left in the sea; rain-forests and clean air will be a thing of the past; polar ice-caps will be gone; oceans will rise; entire countries will disappear; life will change in ways you can’t even imagine. There could be famine, worldwide epidemics, life expectancy will be lower. And we’re not just talking about the future: we’re talking about my future.

“But this is no surprise. You adults have known about this for years and, though you could have done something about it, you haven’t. You can say, ‘It’s not my problem”. You can say, ‘I won’t be around in 50 years.’ But from now on you can’t say, ‘I didn’t know.’ Starting today, the lines are drawn. You have to choose sides. Either you’re for my future, or you’re against it; you’re a friend or you’re an enemy. I may just be a kid today, but tomorrow I will be different. This is the last time I’ll be talking to you adults. You had your chance to fix this problem: now we have ours. We won’t be cute; we won’t be patronized; we will not be denied our future.”

Here’s the scientifically-correct version, to be spoken by a well-scrubbed little angel with a sad, gentle smile -

“The political community decided by show of hands that there’s a 90% chance that most of the past half-century’s global warming is caused by things you grown-ups do. The scientific community increasingly disagrees. In your generation, measured changes in cloud cover caused five times as much warming as CO2. If drastic measures aren’t taken soon, by the time I grow up even more millions of people in poor nations will starve because the misuse of food-growing land for biofuels has doubled world food prices. Global warming, whatever causes it, has no effect on fish or rain-forests or air quality; polar ice-caps will still be here; oceans will rise no faster; no countries will disappear; crop yields will improve; epidemics will be fewer; we will live longer than you. Warmer is better. Life will change in ways you can’t even imagine, but not because of global warming.

“Starting today, the lines are drawn. You have to choose sides. Either you’re for rational science, or you’re against it. I may be a kid today, and tomorrow I’ll still be a kid. Even so, I can smell b*llsh*t when I hear it. This is the last time I’ll pay any attention to the hate-filled, malevolent, anti-capitalist propagandists at Greenpeace. When I grow up, I’m going to outlaw environmentalism, confiscate its vast wealth, and give the money to the poor people its mad, bad policies have ruined. We will not deny them their future.”

If anyone sees the lying, Greenpeace version of this advert screened in Britain or any other nation where lies in advertising are unlawful, please let me know and I shall arrange for Greenpeace to be prosecuted.

Talking of adverts, do visit our good friends at www.globalwarmingheartland.org and watch the hilarious advert for Horner & Horner, Attorneys-at-Law, who offer to sue if your child is suffering from Global Warming Alarmism. The ad was made by Chris Horner, the Environment Fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. It’s a hoot. Enjoy!
