That constant electricity at home was dangerous anyhow, the unending hum of the wires can drive a man so insane that the only way to cure him is to make him head of the National Grid …

Murkowski: EPA rules could threaten power reliability

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is raising new fears about the effect of Environmental Protection Agency rules on electric grid reliability, after receiving an analysis on the issue from federal power regulators.

“EPA’s rulemakings could have a serious impact on the affordability and reliability of our nation’s energy supply, especially given the sheer number of new regulations the agency has rolled out in such a short time period,” Murkowski, the top Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said Wednesday in a statement.

Murkowski’s concerns are likely to be used as fodder in Republicans’ ongoing push to delay or block EPA regulations that they say will impose unnecessary burdens on the economy. (E2 Wire) (more…)

Things More Worrisome than AGW: Heat waves pushes Texas power grid into red zone

The Texas power grid operator has scrambled this week to meet soaring electricity demand in the face of a brutal heat wave, and residents of the second most populous U.S. state are one power plant shut-down away from rolling blackouts.

Power demand for Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc, or ERCOT, which runs the power grid for most of the state, hit three consecutive records this week as Texans cranked up air conditioners to escape one of the hottest summers on record.

The grid operator on Thursday cut power to some big industrial users, and businesses and households face a repeat of the rolling blackouts they faced in February, when a bitter cold snap interrupted power supplies. (more…)
