Climate Anecdote

by J.E. Dyer

It was before 5:00 AM PDT on Thursday morning when I heard from The Weather Channel?s chirpy Stephanie Abrams that the debate was settled:  ?global warming is real.?  The way we know this is that 300 scientists have come out with a new report that there has been a 1 degree Celsius increase in the global average temperature over the last 50 years.

That is, in fact, what she said: 1 degree Celsius.  Somebody?s bound to have it recorded somewhere.  I don?t remember how many times she said it, but it was more than once.  I?m sure it was simply a burble, an inadvertent misstatement, because as I confirmed later on the web, the claimed temperature increase is 1 degree Fahrenheit, not 1 degree Celsius.  This is a significant difference in the scope of the claim, of course, degrees Fahrenheit representing smaller increments than degrees Celsius (1 degree F being about 0.55 degrees C).  The increase in global average temperatures thus sounds a whole lot like the 0.6C advertised to us over the last decade, until discrepancies in NOAA?s data processing and the revelation of ClimateGate-o-List gave us the parody-ready expression ?hide the decline.? UK’s Energy Future

Friday, July 30th, 2010

by Dennis Ambler

The penny is fast dropping that by far the most disastrous appointment made by David Cameron to his Coalition Cabinet was that of the ultra-green, Lib Dem millionaire Chris Huhne as our Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

Yesterday, after Mr Huhne issued his first annual statement on Britain’s energy future, it was clear that we should all be very, very concerned about the future of Britain.

As was only too predictable, the overall theme of Mr Huhne’s message was that ‘climate change is the greatest global challenge we face’. (more…)

Climategate, Amazongate, Bob Ward and the Murdoch empire

To the colourful Daily Telegraph blogger James Delingpole, it was winner of the coveted award for the “Biggest front page non-story in history of journalism”. What he was referring to was a tale published a week ago under the by-line of The Times’s enviromment correspondent Ben Webster which led the paper, covering virtually the entire front-page and with a whole further page inside, beneath the huge headline “Oil giant gives £1 million to fund climate sceptics.”

Everything about this story was bizarre. Its essence, based on information which as Webster told us was had been supplied by Bob Ward, policy director of the Grantham Institute on Climate Change, was that Exxon Mobil, the world’s largest oil company, last year gave “almost £1 million” to four US think-tanks. The Productive Class and the American Aristocracy

By S. T. Karnick

As the hostilities between the current government and the Tea Party movement have become increasingly rancorous, the division of American society into two cultures holding thoroughly incompatible worldviews has become obvious. In fact, the two forces are clearly on an unavoidable collision course. Although many people may understandably be most interested in knowing which side will prevail, I think an equally important and troubling question is precisely by what means the matter will be resolved. Will reason prevail and the people in power either have their agenda confirmed or step aside gracefully? Or will there be intransigence, increasing conflict, and even violence?
I do not believe that the answer to that question is by any means obvious.

CO2 Hypocricy — Obamas’ Vacation Carbon Footprints

Washington/Madrid – US First Lady Michelle Obama and one of her two daughters will take a summer break in Spain, a White House source said Monday. Mother and daughter would come to the southern holiday resort of Marbella on a “private visit in the company of old friends,” the source told the German Press Agency dpa.

US President Barack Obama will not accompany his wife, the source said. Spanish media reports said Michelle Obama and her younger daughter Sasha, 9, would be on Spain’s Costa del Sol between August 4 and 8. There had been speculation that Barack Obama might also come to Spain to celebrate his 49th birthday on August 4.

Michelle Obama has reserved about 30 rooms for herself and her daughter, their friends and bodyguards at a five-star hotel in Benahavis near Marbella, hotel sources said. The US first lady did not make any special requests, hotel owner Ricardo Arranz said, explaining that the hotel would function normally during her stay. Earlier on Monday, sources at the Zarzuela royal palace declined to say whether King Juan Carlos would meet Michelle Obama, stressing that there was no official confirmation of the first lady’s visit to Spain. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s government had been disappointed in its hopes of hosting Barack Obama when the US president cancelled his participation in a European Union-US summit that had been scheduled during the Spanish EU presidency in the first half of 2010.  The summit was subsequently called off. Mrs. Madoff Exonerates Michael Mann

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

by Paul Driessen

Pennsylvania State University recently released a report summarizing its final “investigation” into whether one of its employees had committed scientific misconduct. The report exonerated Dr. Michael Mann of all charges, although he did receive a tap on the wrist – for sharing unpublished manuscripts with third parties without first getting the authors’ permission!

The result was hardly unexpected. Most experts who question climate disaster claims had assumed Penn State would produce a whitewash. PSU stood to lose significantly in reputation and dollars if it found that Dr. Mann had cheated on research and engaged in other conduct unbecoming of a university professor. What was surprising is the reason it gave for its “not guilty” finding.

Dr. Mann could not possibly be guilty, the report averred, because his “level of success in proposing research and obtaining funding” was possible only because he had “met or exceeded the highest standards of his profession.” Indeed, his research was consistently “judged to be outstanding by his peers.” (more…)

Partial list of CRU funders

Below is a partial list of funders for the Climatic Research Unit of climategate fame.  These organizations and companies funded Phil Jones and the CRU division of the “hockey stick team.”  Notice all the major international oil companies, leftist NGOs and self-interested governments — none of which climate alarmists mention when questioning funding of climate realists.

“This list is not fully exhaustive, but we would like to acknowledge the support of the following funders (in alphabetical order):” (more…)

My Global Warming Skepticism, for Dummies

by Roy Spencer, Ph.D.

I receive many e-mails, and a recurring complaint is that many of my posts are too technical to understand. This morning?s installment arrived with the subject line, ?Please Talk to Us?, and suggested I provide short, concise, easily understood summaries and explanations ?for dummies?.

So, here?s a list of basic climate change questions, and brief answers based upon what I know today. I might update them as I receive suggestions and comments. I will also be adding links to other sources, and some visual aids, as appropriate. (more…)

More Devestating Than Global Warming? Leftists & Alarmists Turn UK Into Just Another Banana-Island Republic

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Source:  C3 Headlines

The UK is a shell of its former “superpower” self. Sadly, the country that stood up to Hitler has evolved into a nation of pathetic, weak, frightened souls. This once great nation is now solely led by a small group of elitists who casually propagate melodramatic fears with the objectives of asserting greater control and self-enrichment for themselves. In essence, the UK ruling class has become their country’s own worst enemy.

The current events of the UK read like some third world banana republic where Monty Python-crazed despots are institutionalizing irrational policies of self-destruction. Literally, the former superpower has become the world’s super joke – and it’s all self-inflicted. (more…)

Blatant Misrepresentation by Muir Russell Panel

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Source:  Climate Audit

The Muir Russell panel blatantly misrepresented the facts surrounding Jones? notorious request to ?delete all emails?, a misrepresentation that, in my opinion, was done, at a minimum, either recklessly or out of gross negligence.

The Muir Russell Report
Muir Russell?s findings on the ?delete any emails? incident are contained in chapter 10 paragraph 28. Obviously the issuing of an FOI request affects the right of Jones or anyone else to delete documents. Muir Russell purported to exonerate CRU on this count on the empirical basis that the ?delete any emails? request had not occurred in the context of a prior FOI request ? a claim that is totally untrue. Here?s a list with links of many of the scandals we?ve seen in climate science.
As of June 5, 2010

1. Acceleration-gate
Claims that sea level rise is accelerating are shown to be misleading.
2. Africa-gate
IPCC wrongly claims that in some African countries yields from rain-fed agriculture could be
reduced by up to 50 percent by 2020.
3. AIT-gate and British High Court
35 errors or gross exaggerations are found in Al Gore?s Oscar winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth.
4. Amazon-gate
IPCC cites ?robust? source: green activist organisation WWF.
5. Antarctic sea-gate#
Antarctic sea ice underestimated by 50%. (more…)

Money makes the activists go round

A reader review posted on the Amazon website of the useful book A Primer on CO2 and Climate, second edition by American academic Howard C. Hayden says ?someone recommended this book to me. So I went here, and all I see are glowing reviews. Yet, if you check up on this retired professor, he sits on an organisation called CFACT that has received over $US472,000 ($A532,000) from ExxonMobil over that last seven years. CFACT has been critical of government regulation on many issues, including the o-zone layer, mercury emissions, global warming, toxic waste and the use of pesticides. While buying this $US14.95 book helps supplement his income, it is pretty clear who is funding his retirement.?

This comment is typical of the dirt flung by activists at anyone who dares to challenge their dearly held belief that the science on human induced global warming is rock solid. Also, like all such accusations, the amounts produced with a flourish by the global warming activists contradicts the case they are trying to make, that big energy is bankrolling scepticism. The amount revealed works out to a little more than just $US67,000 a year, which is trivial even in Australian terms for a lobbying organisation of any size let alone in America where CFACT operates, and never mind that it?s been given to the organisation with which Hayden happens to be associated rather than directly to the scientist. The amount just looks large to activists. (more…)

Global warming alarmists in full retreat as skeptics attack greenhouse theory

by Kirk Myers

Sensing that their sky-is-falling theory is crumbling under scientific scrutiny, the always-insecure global warming True Believers are losing their cool, lashing out at critics with a mounting campaign of scurrilous personal attacks, impugning the motives, integrity and mental state of anyone who refuses to genuflect before the high priesthood of anthropogenic global warming (AGW).

The latest target of the Warmists:  Viscount Christopher Monckton begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting of Brenchley, a mathematician and leading critic of the global warming theory, a.k.a. “climate change.”  Monckton was recently mocked and browbeaten in a 115-slide presentation by John Abraham, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.  His “hit and run” slide-show attack was an attempt to discredit a presentation that Monckton had given in St. Paul, Minnesota, in October 2009.

Monckton replied with a powerful rebuttal that, point by point, eviscerated Abraham’s embarrassingly dishonest production.  Monckton called on Abraham and the university to issue a formal apology, remove the libelous presentation from the Internet, and donate $110,000 to a Haitian charity as compensation for the damage done to his reputation. Abraham surrenders to Monckton. Uni of St Thomas endorses untruths.

Source. JoNova

What do you do when someone speaks against your faith, sounds authoritative, well informed, and backs everything up with lots of evidence? If you’re sane, you change your mind.

If you are John P. Abraham, a lecturer in fluid mechanics at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota, you write to a few select scientists distorting what your opponent said, and then collect the infuriated responses. Abraham went on to assemble a list of things Christopher Monckton didn’t say,  complained about things he didn’t cite (even if he did and it’s printed on his slides), pretended he couldn’t find sources (but didn’t take ten minutes to ask), and created a litany of communication pollution in an effort to denigrate Monckton’s character.

The untruths and fabrications have come back to bite him. (more…)

China Makes Western CO2 ?Control? Pointless

Musings from the Chiefio, 20 July 2010

EM Smith

In recent news we had that China has surpassed the USA as the worlds largest energy consumer. It?s now the ?Big Boy? on the block. All the proposed CO2 ?control? treaties to date have given a ?free pass? to the poor underdeveloped world on the theory that they needed special favors to ?catch up? to the evil west that had suppressed them. Well, folks, China is now the ?Big Boy? on the block. Not some little backwater nobody striving to get their first light bulbs and flush toilettes. If you want to ?control? CO2 emissions, you absolutely must include China. And that is just not going to happen. (more…)
